Planning a vacation that includes travel within the United States? Don’t let an outdated ID ruin your trip. Starting May 7, 2025, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will require all travelers to present a REAL ID-compliant form of identification to board domestic flights. This can be a passport or REAL ID issued by your state. If your current driver’s license doesn’t meet the new federal standards, you could be turned away at security. Here’s what you need to know now to ensure stress-free travel later.
What Is a REAL ID?
A REAL ID is a driver’s license or state-issued ID that meets new federal security standards. You can recognize it by the star in the top corner of the card. Not all state-issued IDs are REAL ID-compliant, so it’s important to check yours and update it if needed.
Do I Need a REAL ID to Fly?
If you want to fly within the United States using just your driver’s license or state ID, yes—you will need a REAL ID. Otherwise, you’ll have to bring a valid passport or another acceptable form of ID, even if you’re not leaving the country. For many vacation travelers, it’s easier to have a REAL ID, so you don’t need to carry your passport for a simple flight to Florida or California.
How Do I Get a REAL ID?
To get a REAL ID, visit your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in person. According to the Department of Homeland Security, you’ll need to provide documentation showing your full legal name, date of birth, Social Security number, and lawful status as well as two proofs of address. Be prepared and bring the following documents:
- Proof of identity, such as a valid U.S. passport or birth certificate
- Proof of Social Security number
- Two documents that show your current address like a utility bill or lease agreement
Check your state’s DMV website for specific documentation requirements and appointment availability.
Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute
With the deadline just a few weeks away, DMV offices are expected to become increasingly more busy. If you’re planning to travel in the late spring or summer, we recommend applying for your REAL ID as soon as possible to avoid delays.
Planning ahead ensures smoother travel and one less thing to worry about before your next getaway. Still have questions? Our travel agents are happy to help you prepare!
